Spat on Shell

Seed to Shuck Ventures produces spat on shell for oyster restoration projects on the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. This includes work to re-plant on designated sanctuaries as well as public fishery locations and private leases.

Larvae is produced in our hatchery at Hoopers Island and sourced from other hatcheries on the Bay for large contracts. Using our shell reserves, millions of larvae are then set in 3,000 and 8,000-gallon aerated holding tanks on the property with water temperatures at a minimum of 70°F. The larvae are fed a daily shellfish algae diet while they undergo metamorphosis. After five to seven days, shells are evaluated for setting efficiency and verified by a third-party prior to planting.

We also sell spat on shell to conservation organizations for restoration efforts and for private bottom projects.

Transportation

Seed to Shuck owns a fleet of workboats based at Hoopers Island that are used for surveying and planting projects on the Chesapeake Bay.

Shell Sourcing

We maintain a stockpile of shell at our Hoopers Island location that is used for our own spat on shell production.
