Seed at the Hatchery
Eyed-larvae grown in our hatchery for seed production are moved outdoors to Seed to Shuck’s nursery. In our downweller system, they are given ambient water and algae for nourishment. Micro-culch – finely ground oyster shell – is added so the baby oysters can attach to substrate. In just 24 hours, they undergo metamorphosis and become seed.
When the oysters reach .5mm in size (about 500 micron) they are transferred to an upweller system and fed unaltered ambient water for the first time. Growth is rapid and after two to four weeks, they are graded for size and moved to baskets in the upweller system and ready for seed sales at various sizes.
Ordering seed
We take orders for small-sized seed at 1mm, 2mm and 4mm. A 25% deposit is required on all orders. We ship seed through October with pre-ordering for the new year’s seed sales beginning in January.
